Egypt, Algeria, Morocco fall in global competitiveness rankings

New business survey lauds Gulf countries, but some Middle East economies do badly and North African states, apart from Tunisia, under pressure.

Gulf economies, spearheaded by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, posted large gains in global competitiveness in 2008 buoyed by reforms aimed at boosting efficiency and diversifying their economies away from high dependence on hydrocarbons, a business survey has revealed.
