AngloGold threatens 'down-sizing' if strike continues

Top gold producer AngloGold Ashanti warned on Monday that further strikes at its South African mines may result in "premature downsizing," raising the stakes in a high profile stand-off with workers.

After more than a week of illegal strikes over pay, AngloGold's chief executive Mark Cutifani indicated the company's patience was wearing thin.

"Clearly for South Africa's gold sector, as for many others, there is a very clear trade-off between investing in the sustainability of our business and employment," he said in a statement.

"If the current unprotected strike continues, it compounds risks of a premature downsizing of AngloGold Ashanti's South African operations," he added

The gold giant's South Africa operations employ around 35,000 people, including contractors.
