Number of taxpayers doubles in two years
The number of people registered to pay tax in South Africa has more than doubled in the past two years according to figures published in Business Report, which quotes Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan as saying the tax base had grown from 6-million in 2010 to 13,7-million in March this year.
However, Gordhan points out that not all taxpayers are liable for income tax because they earn less that the threshold of R63 556 a year. Figures quoted by Oupa Magashula, the commissioner of SARS show that in March this year, 12-million people contributed R251,6-billion to South Africa's coffers, according to Business Report.
