Sama wants student doctors withdrawn

The SA Medical Association has called on the Health Professional Council of SA to withdraw student doctors from Tembisa hospital.
Sama wants student doctors withdrawn

This call came after the interns spent the night sleeping in the hospital's casualty ward after they were locked out of their residence because their leases had expired.

Sama spokesman Phophi Ramathuba said on Tuesday (8 October): "Depriving student doctors of proper living quarters is an insult not only to them but to the medical profession as a whole."

She said the Health Professional Council of SA must withdraw Tembisa's licence to teach interns.

"The interns must be relocated to another facility that meets the requirements. This must happen as soon as possible," Ramathuba said.

Thirteen student doctors were forcefully removed from flats the hospital had rented at Midrand Village after the lease expired at the end of September.
