SA team runners-up at Pan African Maths Olympiad
The South African Youth Maths Olympiad team were the runners-up in this year's Pan African Maths Olympiad (PAMO), which took place recently in Tunisia.
The team consisted of the brightest young learners from all over South Africa and included Rustenburg High School for Girls pupil Lauren Denny, who earlier this year took second place at the UCT Mathematics Competition.
Denny (Grade 11) was awarded a Silver medal and was placed seventh overall. Her teammate Shaylon Lalloo won Gold and was placed second behind Henry Chigozie Aniobi from Nigeria.
"This year the PAMO was particularly exciting (if for the wrong reasons), as we found ourselves in Tunis in the middle of the riots that set alight the American embassy," Denny commented.
The Pan African Mathematics Olympiads (PAMO) is an event of the African Mathematics Union (AMU) organised each year in an African country where the best pupils in Mathematics in Secondary Education are invited to compete. The competition consisted of two four-and-a-half hour papers of three questions each, which were written over two days. The host country, Tunisia, was placed first, only nine points ahead of the South African team.
