New president for Western Cape Master Builders Association
“I feel honoured and have always looked up to the past presidents who have served before me. My grandfather’s business partner was a president in 1963 - eight years before I was born – and, as a child, I always marvelled at this when looking at pictures on the office walls of the family’s construction business. I must be one of the youngest presidents to have been elected so that is a bit daunting. It is my aim, both as president and as a member, to support the MBAWC’s primary objective of ensuring that the reputation of the building industry remains high and that investment in building is therefore attracted to it,” said Slingsby on his appointment.
The association also voted Roy Hendricks, regional sales director of RMD Kwikform Formwork and Scaffolding, into the office of senior vice president and selected Rick Volker, general manager at Aveng Grinaker-LTA, as junior vice president.
Leading change, tackling challenges
Hendricks, who also comes from a construction family, shares that it is an honour and privilege for him to have been chosen to serve in the best interest of MBAWC members. “As senior vice president, I hope to ensure that the MBAWC maintains its high standards and continues to add value to our members and industry at large. Our industry is currently experiencing very tough times, with political uncertainty impacting negatively on investor confidence. We, as the leadership, must be at the forefront of leading change and assisting our members to tackle and overcome these challenges. My intention is not to just serve, but to leave a lasting legacy.”
During his term as junior vice president, Volker hopes to further the MBAWC’s efforts in ensuring that high safety standards are observed across the industry. He says: “I am proud of the positive way in which our industry and association impacts people’s lives and am therefore excited at the prospect of having a more meaningful share in that.” He believes that the combined knowledge and experience of the MBAWC’s members can make the industry better for themselves and the people they serve.
“I look forward to working with John, Roy and Rick and seeing the value that each will bring to our organisation. I’m certain that MBAWC will benefit enormously from the collaboration of their various backgrounds, experience, expertise and individual qualities,” concludes MBAWC executive director Allen Bodill.
