Sandboarding battle in Western Cape
On 27 March, 2010, some of the Western Cape's top sandboarders will be competing in the annual Sand Blast 2010 competition to be named “Master of the Sand” at Betty's Bay.
The disciplines will be Boarder Cross, Slalom and the crowd-pleasing Big Air. In Boarder Cross, riders will compete against one another down a specially designed course to advance to the final round; in Slalom, riders will be timed as they weave between flags with the shortest time securing first place; and in Big Air, riders will drop in, hit a ramp as fast as possible and attempt a number of outrageous moves.
Fantastic turnout expected
Considered an underground sport for some time, sandboarding has recently begun hitting the mainstream with boarding communities expanding into all corners of South Africa. Rob Baird, sandboarder and member of the competition committee, said: “We have seen a huge increase in boarders across the country as more and more people are getting involved in the sport. The competition has already received wide interest and we are expecting a fantastic turnout on the day.''
Entry is R10 for spectators and R50 for participants. All those who wish to participate should contact Rob Baird on or go to the Sand Blast 2010 Facebook page.
