Updated guide to addiction now available
Stepping Stones Addiction Centre has updated its Family Guide to Alcohol and Other Drugs, first released in 2003. The pamphlet clearly and simply explains what addiction is; its physical and behavioural characteristics; the paraphernalia commonly used; what to do and what not to do when confronted with addiction; common myths, and the intervention process that can be used to help reluctant people into treatment.
While the prevalence of addiction is soaring in South Africa, there is a frightening lack of knowledge amongst the general public about what constitutes addiction, and what to do and what not to do when it is discovered.
The pamphlet, available free of charge, has been published as a service to the community, by the skilled multi-disciplinary team at Stepping Stones Addiction Centre in Kommetjie, Cape Town.
Healthcare professionals are often the first to be consulted by concerned parents, spouses and partners about addiction problems in their families. According to the centre, the pamphlet has proven to be an invaluable aid to doctors and community pharmacies.
