Nel will play Sonata in D by Mozart, Sonata no 2 in G minor by Schumann, Beethoven Waldstein Sonata and works by Ian Fletcher and Debussy.

The official opening of the new subscription season, for which discounted subscriptions are available, begins on February 22 with a recital by Charl du Plessis. At this concert, Du Plessis will start his South African solo recital tour of his 10 favourite Steinways. The history, engineering and craftsmanship of every hand made instrument will fall under the spotlight. He will play a range of music from Bach to Rachmaninov and Gershwin, showcasing the endless colour possibilities of each piano and will not only explain the inner workings of the piano but during the concert the whole mechanism and keyboard will be removed to show the delicate inside.

The Cape Consort will be presented on March 15. Known for their historically informed and creative interpretations, the musicians will play an Italian themed programme 'From Madrigal to Cantata' with music by Monteverdi, Strozzi, Gesualdo, Carissimi and Handel.

On April 26, the popular TwoPianists duo of Nina Schumann and Luis Magalhaes will present an All-American programme of Barber, Rzeswki, Adams and Liebermann; on May 17, the Concert Series presents an evening of Spanish music with guitarists James Grace and Saudiq Kahn.

The season concludes on June 7 with a recital by the winner of the 1998 International Violin Competition 'Premio Paganini', Ilya Gringolts, partnered by pianist Peter Laul.

All concerts start at 8pm. Tickets are R125 each; with special rates for students and seniors and a series subscription attracts a 20% discount. The tickets for the Anton Nel recital are R140 and R115 for pensioners. For more information, go to www.ctconcerts.co.za/subscribe.html or email az.oc.strecnoctc@ofni.
