Politicians get educated at University of Johannesburg

Over three hundred municipal elected political leaders, councillors and officials of three metropolitan municipalities and 35 local municipalities recently qualified for their final examinations in Municipal Governance at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

The Municipal Governance courses, supported by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and the Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA), aim to equip municipal elected political leaders and officials with the skills to manage the regulatory and institutional framework of local government, local government policy and strategy development, integrated development planning and local economic development, project management, strategic budgeting, finances and human resource management, local government leadership, communication, research and report writing, ethics and good governance, and local government organisational design and development.

More than 160 students participated in the National Certificate in Municipal Governance and 153 in the Advanced Certificate in Municipal Governance. According to prof Christelle Auriacombe of the Faculty of Humanities' Sanlam Centre for Public Management and Governance, this achievement of the municipalities involved, highlights just how critical skills development is for municipalities.
