Mediclinic welcomes NHI plan

Mediclinic has welcomed the National Health Insurance plan proposed by government and says that its private hospitals would remain profitable according to a report published in Business Report.

Quoting Braam Joubert, Mediclinic's chief financial officer, Business Report says that the hospital group has set aside R400 million for capital expenditure projects to expand its hospitals in preparation for the NHI project.

The NHI's green paper has provided some clear guidelines for private hospital groups but as Joubert points out it is a discussion document and clarity is needed on aspects such as co-payments, tax and the value-for-money equation used in it.

In a separate development, Times Live says that a draft human resources strategy document shows that the Department of Health currently needs 83 043 professionals.

Times Live says the department needs to employ 1299 more anaesthetists, 730 surgeons and 4294 general practitioners.
