The award-winners were announced at a function held on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which was themed 'Removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all'. The National Disability Champion Award is for employers or individuals who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to improving the lives of people with disabilities.

The annual Disability Awards aim to honour and raise the profile of workers with disabilities who are making a remarkable difference in the workplace, as well as individuals and organisations supporting the advancement of people with disabilities.

"As Airports Company South Africa, we are honoured to have been recognised for our efforts through this award," says ACSA Group Communications Manager, Solomon Makgale. "Our Corporate Social Investment programmes are mainly focused on community development, disability and environmental initiatives. Through this award, we hope to encourage other corporates to follow our example which will further raise awareness of issues affecting people with disabilities."

To date, ACSA has donated more than 9 000 wheelchairs since 2003. For the past eight years, ACSA has also been the major sponsor of Wheelchair Tennis South Africa.
