Christmas comes early for Takalani

Village Walk Shopping Centre management team visited Takalani Home for the Mentally Disabled based in Diepkloof, Soweto on 31 August, 2010. The visit was to surprise the patients with a donation of a foosball table and a R1000 PnP voucher as an early Christmas gift.

The donation is in aid of assisting the patients relax and enable them to stimulate their hand and eye co-ordination skills. The foosball table was given to Village Shopping Centre during the 2010 World Cup by Visa, for the centre to entertain its shoppers.

Takalani Home for the Mentally Handicapped is a non profit NGO, formed by the community of Soweto in 1990. Takalani presently caters for 384 people. Their ages range from 3 to 50 and they reside at the institution. The institution receives 75% subsidies from Social Services and Health Department. The other 25% has to be raised by Takalani, themselves. The home therefore embarks on serious fundraising projects to sustain the centre and most importantly, keep its doors open.

The donation was warmly received by the manager Johannes Majola and Phumzile Maseko in the presence of Mminki Malahlele from the Department of Health and Social Development.
