SAMA Board chairperson steps down with immediate effect
Dr Coetzee made the announcement during a SAMA Board meeting last night (17 February, 22). She will remain as an ordinary member of the SAMA Board.
The news comes days after Dr Coetzee made comments on a popular radio station that the admission criteria at medical schools was politicised. She said a person's race was prioritised in the selection process over applicants' matric results.
Coetzee’s resignation comes days after Sama publicly distanced itself from statements made by Coetzee during an interview on CapeTalk radio last month. During the interview, the respected doctor said the admission process to medical schools was politicised.
The current vice-chairperson of the SAMA Board, Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa, will assume the role of interim chairperson while the Board contemplates Dr Coetzee’s permanent replacement.
Dr Mzukwa is an experienced general practitioner in KZN and a seasoned member of the association. Dr Edward Ngwenya, the chairperson of SAMA’s Chairperson’s Forum – a forum of the chairpersons of all SAMA branches, will assume the role of Interim vice-chairperson.
Dr Ngwenya is a specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon practising in Gauteng. He is equally well-versed in matters related to the health profession. We look forward to a successful tenure as we continue championing for the health of the nation.
