Sama works to place newly qualified doctors

Following Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi's announcement on 12 December 2018 of a massive recruitment drive in the healthcare sector, the South African Medical Association (Sama) says it is working to ensure all newly qualified intern and community service doctors are placed and ready to start working on 1 January 2019.

The minister said that more than 5,300 healthcare posts, ranging from cleaners to specialists, are to be filled in all nine provinces.

However, there has been over allocation of doctors at certain institutions that do not have the sufficient number of posts to employ them, such as Jubilee and Tambo Memorial hospitals. "We have been engaging with the Department of Health on a regular basis, and have been assured that all affected doctors are being reassigned to surrounding tertiary institutions,” says Dr Angelique Coetzee, chairperson of Sama.

She says the process should be successfully completed by the end of today. (28 December 2018), and advises all affected doctors to contact Sama’s offices should they require any assistance.
