Discovery Health Journalism Awards opens new category

Discovery Health Journalism Awards has opened a brand new award category, the Discovery Foundation Nation-builder Award, which aims to acknowledge the positive coverage of work done by healthcare professionals or organisations in the public healthcare sector.

The testimonies of lives changed through the Discovery Foundation have reaffirmed that there is significant work being done in the public sector across the country.

It is an important task of the media to unearth and publicise the many inspiring stories of hard work, dedication, perseverance and compassion by healthcare professionals in some of our most needy communities. By profiling the work done by unsung heroes under difficult conditions, journalists acknowledge and validate these role models of community service. For this reason, the Discovery Foundation Nation-builder Award seeks to honour exceptional health journalism that highlights uplifting stories in the public healthcare system.

Entry and prizes

The awards are open to journalists who have already or will be publishing, broadcasting or printing health reports in the period from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2013.

The winner of each category will receive a cash prize of R25,000. The overall winner, the Discovery Health Journalist of the Year, will walk away with a total prize of R75,000. The judging panel will select the winner from the winning entrants of the nine categories.

Journalists winning in multiple categories as well as the Discovery Health Journalist of the Year will receive a total prize capped at R75,000. The judging panel reserves the right to recommend additional prizes based on merit.

The closing date for all entries is 10 February 2014.
