    New appointments at Champion Newspapers

    The Board of Champion Newspapers Limited (CNL) in Nigeriahas announced new appointments in a bid to reposition the company.

    The new appointees include: Nwadiuto Iheakanwa, who is now the managing director/editor-in-chief; Sam Ibemere, executive director of publications/operations; Luke Okoro, managing editor; Thomas Imonikhe, editor of Weekend Champion; Bisiriyu Olaoye, deputy editor of Daily Champion and Sam Nzeh, deputy editor of the Weekend Champion.

    Iheakanwa holds a B.Science degree in business management from the University of Detroit, Michigan, and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, Michigan in the US. Before then, she had bagged an Associate Degree in Business Technology from the Highland Park Community College, Highland Park, Michigan. She is also an alumnus of Lagos Business School, LBS

    Iheakanwa, before her present position, was the executive director, Oriental Airlines Limited; general manager, Netalliance Publishing Inc. Laurel Maryland, USA. and group executive director, Champion Newspapers Limited.

    Among her present and past special duties/leadership assignments are: member, Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN); director, National Sports Lottery; Director, Solid Foundation Investment Group; Sunrise Insurance Limited; Iwuanyanwu Nationale Football Club, and Iwuanyanwu Properties and Holdings Limited; Member, International Volunteer Effort (South Africa) and delegate, 3rd World Economic Summit (South Africa).

    Ibemere holds a First degree in International Relations from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife; Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Management from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) before obtaining a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA), from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).

    He was general manager: marketing between 2002 and 2004; general manager: publications, 2004-2006 and executive director: operations before his new position. He has attended leadership courses both locally and internationally, including the prestigious American Press Institute (API), Reston, Virginia USA.

    Okoro, a graduate of Mass Communication from the University of Maiduguri, joined Champion Newspapers Limited in 1991. Before then, he had worked with The Guardian and the defunct Mail Newspapers Lagos. A business journalist and widely travelled, Okoro was until recently editor of the Sunday Champion.

    Imonikhe joined Champion Newspapers Limited (CNL) in August 1991 as a reporter. He was appointed news editor, Daily Champion in 2005 and later rose to become the group news editor in January 2008, a position he held until September 2010 when he was appointed deputy editor, Daily Champion.

    Imonikhe, in March 2011, was appointed editor, Saturday Champion a position he held until 9 January 2012 when he was named editor, Weekend Champion. Imonikhe holds a Diploma in Mass Communication from the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and International Studies from Lagos State University (LASU).

    Olaoye, a graduate of Mass Communication, joined Champion Newspapers in 1997. Before then, he had worked, among others, with The Punch and Independent Communication Network Limited (ICNL), publishers of TheNews, Tempo, A.M News and P.M. News. He was until his new appointment the deputy editor, Sunday Champion.

    Nzeh, is a graduate of Political Science from the University of Calabar, Cross River State. He has attended several media training courses. He began his journalism career in 1999 with Post Express Newspapers, Lagos, and joined Champion Newspapers in 2006. He was until his new appointment assistant editor, Saturday Champion.
