    WAN-IFRA releases 2011 research collection

VIENNA: WAN-IFRA yesterday, Tuesday, 11 October 2011, published the "Research Collection 2011 - Shaping the Future of the Newspaper", a smorgasbord of research reports and report summaries designed to acquaint the industry with the various facets of WAN-IFRA's research activities in 2011.

Topics range from mobile news services in Africa to colour management for print operations, from re-organising newsroom operations to engaging young readers.

The organisation also announced the appointment of Kristina Bürén, MD of WAN-IFRA Nordic, to the additional position of research director.

Bürén said, "Research has been and remains one of WAN-IFRA's most important activities. Both the former organisations, IFRA and WAN, have long produced widely-appreciated research reports to help the media industry solve problems and manage new tasks - in areas including newspaper printing technology, new digital platforms and business opportunities, and long-range strategic planning. That resulted in reports published under numerous brands and series. Now that we are a merged organisation, we present all WAN-IFRA research under one brand name: Shaping the Future of the Newspaper.

"Although we have had several research projects in 2011, as you can see in the Research Collection, we need to do much more. My tasks in the near future will be to make sure we find the right projects and sponsors to conduct research - and also to communicate better to our members what projects we are conducting and how they can benefit from them."

Reports included in the Research Collection 2011:

    • Trends in Newsrooms 2011 (published by the World Editors Forum)
    • Financially Viable Media in Emerging and Developing Markets (with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, SIDA)
    • Addressing the Capitalization Gap for Independent News Media (with SIDA)
    • Mobile Media Services at Sub-Saharan African Newspapers: A Guide To Implementing Mobile News And Mobile Business (with SIDA and the African Media Initiative)
    • Report summary: Developments in Colour Management
    • Mission local - creating local value and business in the digital world
    • Best practises 2011: Engaging Young Readers

The Research Collection is available for free downloading by WAN-IFRA members at www.wan-ifra.org/research-reports. The collection can also be ordered as print-on-demand, at a nominal fee to cover costs. A limited number of printed copies will be available at World Newspaper Week in Vienna, 10-15 October.

    About Kristina Bürén

Bürén's appointment took place in August 2011. She coordinates all research projects worldwide and plays a leading role in the development of new research projects. She also is in charge of steering and coordinating all WAN-IFRA committees and their work (standardisation as well as business development issues). Bürén keeps her duties as MD of WAN-IFRA Nordic in addition to those new tasks.

Bürén has managed numerous research and consulting projects, working with newspapers, media companies and mobile operators. She has moderated international conferences and seminars on mobile media and mobile business development in Sweden, Germany, and India.
