The long-term Material and Technical Support Agreement covers Transnet’s Class 43D (C30Aci) and 44D (ES40Aci) locomotives, which transport export commodities, containers and general freight across the country.

Maintenance and digital monitoring

Under the agreement, Wabtec will supply components, technical expertise and predictive maintenance capabilities to Transnet Engineering. The package includes Wabtec’s Expert-on-Alert digital condition-monitoring platform, designed to help improve locomotive performance, maintenance turnaround times and fleet management.

Transnet Engineering CEO Bessie Mabunda said the agreement supports Transnet’s Reinvent for Growth strategy and efforts to improve locomotive fleet performance.

“The 43D and 44D locomotives serve critical freight corridors that move export commodities, containers and general freight across South Africa. Strengthening their reliability and availability will help improve service delivery, support freight recovery and enhance the country’s logistics competitiveness.”

The partnership also includes technical collaboration, knowledge transfer and localisation initiatives intended to strengthen local rail capabilities, develop industry skills and support the long-term sustainability of South Africa’s rail sector.
