The 18-month project, which began in October 2026, covers Urania Road, Newark Road and Ventura Road. The upgrades form part of TNPA's ongoing infrastructure renewal programme and are intended to support cargo growth, improve operational efficiency and strengthen South Africa's logistics network.
Increased heavy vehicle traffic in recent years has accelerated wear and tear on the roads, prompting the need for significant rehabilitation to ensure their long-term operational sustainability.

Road upgrades to improve cargo flow
The works include pavement strengthening, road widening, concrete surfacing, drainage and stormwater improvements, road safety enhancements and related infrastructure upgrades.
Once completed, the improvements are expected to increase road capacity and improve conditions, supporting smoother traffic flow, faster truck turnaround times and greater operational reliability within the port.
Richards Bay port manager Winnie Mpanza said the investment demonstrated TNPA's commitment to maintaining port infrastructure that supports trade.
"This investment demonstrates TNPA's commitment to develop and maintain world-class port infrastructure that enables economic trade. The rehabilitation of these key roads will improve safety and ensure that the Port of Richards Bay continues to meet the needs of all port users while supporting future growth and investment. "This project reinforces Port of Richards Bay's role as a strategic gateway for South African trade."

Project to create 72 employment opportunities
The construction programme is expected to create approximately 72 employment opportunities, contributing to skills development and local economic participation in surrounding communities.
The project also supports Transnet's Reinvent for Growth (R4G) strategy, which prioritises infrastructure recovery and improved performance across the logistics value chain.
TNPA said the investment forms part of its broader commitment to improving the competitiveness, efficiency and resilience of South Africa's ports.
