Project Management Institute (PMI) has launched a free online course to help entrepreneurs turn business ideas into viable ventures, with training covering cash flow, customer validation, project planning and sustainable growth.
The five-hour course, PMI Foundations: Project Management for Entrepreneurs, is aimed at aspiring and early-stage entrepreneurs, including side-hustle creators, freelancers, small business owners and community innovators.
It combines practical templates, reflection exercises, insights from experienced founders and AI-supported brainstorming. No formal business or project management experience is required.
The launch comes as many entrepreneurs and creators struggle to turn their work into reliable income. The Africa Creator Economy Report 2.0 found that about six in 10 respondents earned less than $100 (about R1,700) a month from their creative work, while 71% identified business strategy and management as important skills for attracting investment.
George Asamani, managing director for sub-Saharan Africa at PMI, said creators needed to understand the business behind their content, including the costs involved in delivering work.
“A brand deal can bring in revenue, but creators also need to understand what it will cost to deliver,” Asamani said. “Project management helps them plan that work and use their resources wisely.”
From ideas to execution
The course covers eight areas, including assessing business readiness, financial planning and cash flow, organising tasks, testing ideas with customers, building trust, measuring results, leadership and planning for growth.
For example, entrepreneurs are encouraged to assess costs and available resources before committing to work, test customer demand before investing heavily in a product, and track which activities are translating into sales.
The course also addresses challenges faced by small businesses as they grow, including managing workloads, communicating effectively and building support systems rather than relying on one person to handle every task.
PMI said the course was designed for entrepreneurs across sectors, from creators seeking to generate income from their audiences to people launching products, services or side businesses.
The African Development Bank estimates that 10 million to 12 million young Africans enter the labour market annually, while about three million formal jobs are created, highlighting the importance of income-generating opportunities beyond traditional employment.
The course is available online for free through [PMI’s website](https://www.pmi.org/shop/p-/elearning/pmi-foundations-project-management-for-entrepreneurs-/el363).
