Women earn less than men for similar work and, despite the growing focus on reducing gender inequality in recent years, the pay gap is widening. "Women in developing economies in particular are worse off today than they were last year, giving credence to the impression that women bear the brunt of economic downturns," says Sandra Burmeister, CEO of the Landelahni Recruitment Group. 
IOL says that while there have been disruptions to the ferry service that runs to Robben Island each day, the striking workers have now reduced their wage demand from R3500 across the board to R2000 and the workers no longer insist that the ferry service must stop operating between Christmas and New Year. 
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) says that it will "strongly oppose" attempts to change the labour laws that will allow municipalities to sue for any damages caused by protesting workers, according to an article published by Fin24.
