The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) says that it will "strongly oppose" attempts to change the labour laws that will allow municipalities to sue for any damages caused by protesting workers, according to an article published by Fin24. Read more >>

Multi-billion rand project to replace SA's trains gathers steam
According to the Cape Times, the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) said during a presentation to Parliament that a planned major revamp of Cape Town's rail system will include the modernisation of the national rail system and the replacement of all trains and the construction of new depots and stations. Subject to the government approving its budget, the R123 billion project is set to create 65 000 jobs. Read more >>

Road maintenance creates 13 000 jobs
Over 13 000 jobs have been created through the government's road maintenance programme, according to a report published by Fin24. It says that most of the jobs were created in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by Mpumalanga. Read more >>

Number of SA commercial farmers falls
IOL reports that the number of commercial farmers in South Africa is set to fall from 40 000 to 15 000 over the next 15 years. Experts believe that without enough viable commercial farms, South Africa's food security is endangered. Read more >>

World needs to create 80 million jobs
The world economy will need to create about 80 million jobs over the next two years according to the International Labour Organisation. Raymond Torres, head of the ILO's research institute as saying that the world economy would create just 40 million jobs in the next two years. Read more >>
