Hammerl's killing: SA govt's naiveté, rise of mediaphobia in Africa
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] SA's award-winning photographer Anton Hammerl suffered and died alone - just like scores of journalists silenced in various parts of Africa for simply telling the truth. Gaddafi loyalists' savage act and cover-up, coupled with the South African government's much-criticised handling of the issue, epitomise the rise of mediaphobia in a continent ridden with dictators and illegitimate governments. Alcohol ad ban: whose freedom of choice is served by the media industry?
[Dr Joanne Corrigall] The degree to which change without sacrifice is possible depends entirely upon the problem at hand. In response to Chris Moerdyk's article "Curbing alcohol abuse by banning ads is like trying to cure Aids with beetroot", I suggest that he consider where on this spectrum of sacrifice-for-change alcohol advertising falls. Advertising lessons from apartheid and the Nazis
[Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] The one thing that society should have learnt from apartheid, the Nazis and other failed coprocracies is that banning things is a simple, often politically correct procedure that initially appeases the masses but which ultimately leads to political self-destruction. Throughout history, despotic governments have tried to main social equanimity by banning all sorts of things, including books, liquor, movies and in the case of the early days of apartheid - television. Election coverage shows SABC's stunning lack of sophistication
[Gill Moodie: @grubstreetSA] Broadcasting and online own big breaking stories in today's world and, in South Africa, we saw broad-scale recognition of this from the print media with the coverage of Osama bin Laden's killing last month. So it was interesting to see how our TV and online rose to the challenge of covering the day of the local government elections on Wednesday and the first results coming afterwards today. SA tabloid newspapers: Xenophobic? Intolerant? Nationalistic?
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] At least 60% of South Africans believe that (black) immigrants are a threat to their jobs and the country's socio-economic stability, and they should not be allowed in this country, according to the 2011 futurefact survey. This intolerance, further fuelled by 'anti-immigrant' stories by some tabloid newspapers such as Daily Sun, has led some analysts to question the real motives of tabloid journalism in SA.
