The Egyptian government's announcement that it intends to commission an investigation into the incidences of violence needs to be followed by action as soon as possible. Violent attacks on peaceful demonstrators must not remain unpunished. That applies to violence perpetrated against journalists and people working for human rights organisations as well. The people in Egypt want a better life in freedom and democracy. Egypt's leaders need to support this desire for democratic change in the interests of the country - and they need to do it now," said the statement.
