Tragedy occurs during Ivorian 2010 qualifier
Reports are that 130 people have been injured and 22 people are dead after a stampede at the Houphouet-Boigny stadium in Ivory Coast during a 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifier on 29 March. FIFA has sent its condolences to the football community of that country.
"On behalf of FIFA and the worldwide family of football, I wish to express extreme sorrow and extend our condolences to the Ivorian football community and, most importantly, to family, friends and loved ones following the tragic deaths in Abidjan yesterday", expressed FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter.
A statement from FIFA says that it is in contact with the Fédération Ivorienne de Football and have requested a full report from them, as well as the local authorities to establish the sequence of events that happened outside the stadium before the match.
