Sino-Malawi high-tech media centre on the cards
In an interview with Bizcommunity a Chinese embassy official said they are all geared up to establish a high-tech centre which will among other things have information on China for the Malawi media at their fingertips.
Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Media and Communications Kondwani Nankhumwa also told a local daily that the centre will indeed be established this coming February saying it is his committee that is facilitating the development to ensure that Malawi media develops.
“It's high time we should highlight media development. There is a lot about Chinese infrastructure development at the moment but we also need media development,” said Nankhumwa, “as a media committee we appreciate what China has been doing so far to develop Malawi Media. At least 31 journalists have already travelled to China to learn about Chinese media.”
As part of the media centre activities Nankhumwa said the state-controlled Malawi Television (TVM) is set to benefit a lot as there is an opportunity that it would be signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Chinese Central Television CCTV a move which would help the local broadcaster build capacity.
“Apart from this, we also discussed the possibility for private radio stations to have partnership with Chinese radio stations to help build their capacity as well,” he said.
The centre would be open to the public to access Chinese literature on media and culture as one way of understanding China better that has become one of the fastest growing countries in the world.
