Mauritanian journalist threatened
NOUAKCHOTT – Mohammed Ould Saleck, chairman of the board of directors of Mutpêche, a credit union for fishermen in Mauritania, threatened to throw Isselmou Ould Mustapha, managing editor of Tahalil Hebdo, an independent weekly newspaper, into the sea for refusing to disclose a source of information.
MFWA reported that Saleck, who was not happy with allegations of corruption against Mutpêche published by "Tahalil Hebdo", demanded that the journalist disclose the source of his information.
Upon refusal, Saleck said: "Fine, but try and protect yourself because I will tie you to my car and throw you into the sea".
In its Wednesday 27 April issue the newspaper alleged that Saleck did not follow established procedure in procuring a loan from the Mauritanian Central Bank.
