Ekurhuleni bus roll-out set for April

Ekurhuleni metro on the East Rand expects the first batch of its 30 new bus rapid transit (brT) system buses to hit city streets by April. Named "Harambee" - Swahili for "pulling or working together" - the buses, which cost R40-million, will transport passengers from Tembisa to Vosloorus by way of Isando, Kempton Park, OR Tambo International Airport and Boksburg in the first phase of the project.

Phase 1A offers transport from Tembisa to Rhodesfield, with a feeder service to OR Tambo and a "starter service" to Boksburg and Vosloorus.

In the next, full-service phase, passengers will be ferried from Rhodesfield to OR Tambo and in phase 1C buses will run from OR Tambo to Boksburg.

The last phase is between Boksburg and Vosloorus.

The buses can carry 44 passengers standing and 44 sitting.

The system will link with Johannesburg's Rea Vaya. - Olebogeng Molatlhwa
