Hail, a carless future

The City of Johannesburg will use the transport month of October and its EcoMobility World Festival in Sandton to encourage people to continue not using their cars long after the festivities have ended.

From Monday traffic to Sandton and within its CBD will be changed to allow pedestrians, cyclists and public transport more access by restricting private vehicles, with most traffic lanes dedicated to cyclists and pedestrians. The festival, which will have a number of activities focusing on sustainable mobility of people in cities, is a first to be held on African soil.

Speaking at the festival's media launch, Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau urged the city's residents, including Sandtonians, to take the challenge and use public transport for this month. "Granted, there is some discomfort in the Sandton CBD this morning due to the road closures.

"This is an inevitable price we all have to pay to usher in a new and sustainable era of alternative modes of transport to reduce congestion, carbon emissions and the overall negative economic impact these have on our city," he said.

During the festival, park and ride facilities will be available for R10 a day in various parts of the city to allow people to park their cars and use public transport to the Sandton CBD. The buses will be available at Maponya Mall, Orlando Stadium, Cresta Mall, Monte Casino, Brightwater Commons, Melrose Arch, Westgate, Randburg Square, Balfour Park Shopping Centre, George Lee Park South, Innesfree Park, Marie Avenue City Power servitude and Sandton City.

From 7.30am to 8.30am on weekdays almost 150,000 people move in and out of Sandton.
