Carpool Week: save fuel and make a friend for life

Carpool Week, an initiative that raises awareness and educates on the benefits of carpooling, aims to change behavior away from the single driver car. Join thousands of South Africans who will participate and raise awareness in Carpool Week 2015 by sharing a Carpool Karaoke with #carpoolweekSA.

Carpool Karaoke is the theme for Carpool Week 2015 that takes place from 5-11 October. It will promote the social side of carpooling and share many personal stories from real carpoolers.

Says Daniel Claassen, Carpool Week catalyst and founder of FindaLift: "The fuel price is up 60% and there are 22% more cars on our roads since 2010. Given the fact that 33% of all work trips are done by private vehicle, carpooling can play an important role in fostering behavioral change, reducing our carbon footprint, saving money and relieving traffic congestion."

Often overlooked are the social benefits of carpooling that can have an incredible impact on people's lives. Jessica says they play counselor, coach, dietitian and parent adviser in their lift club. Gill says she and her carpool members are not just colleagues anymore but have become like a family.

There is a common misunderstanding that carpooling takes away your flexibility. In fact you can reap great rewards from carpooling one day a week when it suits you, it can save 10% on your fuel bill and emissions while possibly making a friend for life. Small changes can improve our lives and the world we live in.
