Huge car carrying vessel named in Maputo

A huge car-carrying vessel owned by Hoegh Autoliners has been named the Maputo with the naming ceremony was held at the port last week, according to a report in Ports and Ships.

The 183-metre vessel is a pure car and truck carrier and was delivered to the company by Xiamen Shipbuilding Industries in July this year. The ship sails under the Norwegian flag and it was named the Maputo in recognition of the strong ties that exist between Norway and Mozambique.

Hoegh says that the Maputo car terminal will be an important hub for its car carrying activities to Mozambique and the rest of southern Africa. The ship is capable of carrying 4 900 vehicles.

It is the third in a total of four ships being built for Hoegh Autoliners by Xiamen Shipbuilding Industries.
