Cathay Pacific takes honours as safest airline in the world
For the third consecutive year, Cathay Pacific has been named the world's safest airline according to Germany's Jet Airline Crash Data Evaluation Centre's (JACDEC) Safety Index which analyses factors such as hull loss accidents, revenue passenger kilometres, cumulative passenger data for the last 30 years, fatalities, accident-free years and the number of serious incidents, among other factors, to calculate a rating.
Holding the top ranking for the third consecutive year builds on the industry’s recognition of Cathay Pacific’s high safety standards which saw it rated the second safest airline in 2014, and the third safest airline in 2013.
“Cathay Pacific prides itself on the outstanding safety standards and principles that form the foundation of the remarkable service we provide to every one of our passengers,” says Rakesh Raicar, country manager for Cathay Pacific Southern Africa and Indian Ocean. “Cathay Pacific offers passengers the opportunity to live a life well-travelled, and our continued investments in training, technology, and aircraft position us well to maintain our place as the world’s safest airline.”
Considering the billions of passengers that travel by air each year, the JACDEC findings highlight that commercial aviation remains one of the safest ways to travel, with overall accident analysis revealing a long-term shift away from technical issues, towards human error or malevolent intention being the leading cause of aviation accidents.
The research also noted that from a statistical point of view, 2016 continued an ongoing trend of fewer fatalities in airline travel, and fewer incidents where aircraft were lost or damaged beyond repair.
