Faulty trucks suspended from KZN roads
KZN's transport MEC Willies Mchunu said the trucks were unroadworthy and were suspended. He said the move was part of a campaign by provincial law enforcement officers to intensify inspections of vehicles on the roads in the build-up to the busy festive season.
"Road Traffic Inspectorate officers carried out the operation, which resulted in the testing of 24 trucks, suspension of 17 trucks and the issuing of 28 warrants totalling R21,000," Mchunu said.
The inspections comes after Mchunu launched "Operation Phezukwabo," launch last month which, loosely translated means: "We are onto them".
The campaign was focused on the safety of heavy vehicles, which have caused several major accidents including a Pinetown smash that claimed 24 lives.
Mchunu said: "The fact that a one-day, random operation can lead to suspension of 17 trucks demonstrates the seriousness of the challenge we are dealing with."
He said more traffic officers would be visible on the roads to put an end to road traffic infringements and lessen road fatalities.
