Are clouds forming over iTunes?

Apple is holding talks with record companies that may result in giving iTunes customers a backup of music purchased, Bloomberg has reported.

Instead of music being stored on a user's computer and then distributed to the user's iDevice, it may be stored in the MobileMe cloud.

Apple last month pulled its MobileMe sync and storage service off its website, a move that could point to the possibility of the service's capabilities being expanded to store music, photos and other content.

That might result in a new business model, where users are charged a flat monthly fee for downloading a given number of songs instead of paying for each download as they do now, Michael McGuire, a vice president at Gartner told MacNewsWorld.

However, users might not buy into this approach, McGuire warned.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment by press time.
