The first stage of the partnership SBM - UPI - with these two cards - was intended to make it easier for Mauritian traders, businessmen, students and tourists visiting China and other countries and regions especially in the Far East such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines. UnionPay cards are very well known and accepted in over 150 countries and regions of the world. Now, tourists and businessmen from these regions can use their UPI cards to make transactions during their stay in Mauritius.

The partnership between SBM and UnionPay International dates back to 2012, making SBM the first "acquiring bank" of Mauritius on online commerce. Kee Chong Li WING KWONG, Chairman of SBM Holdings Ltd., in his speech, underline the bilateral relationship history with China: "After today's ceremony, UPI card holders will be able to benefit from SBM's terminals during their stay in Mauritius. Today's launch goes even beyond the SBM - UPI partnership. It is a known fact that China and Mauritius have a strong bilateral relationship. Furthermore, our country shares an extremely rich and diverse culture and at the core of its diversity is the Chinese Community and culture. This heritage dates back to the 18th century and is now the very fabric of the Mauritian society".
He also added that it is a pleasure for SBM to work closely with UnionPay International (UPI) for the consecration of this project. Especially since the number of tourists visiting our island, from China and the countries and regions of Far East, is steadily increasing.

UnionPay has established itself as an international network for inter-bank transactions and other transactions relating to bank cards. In partnership with 400 institutions around the world and with the most rapid developed network, UnionPay International offers reliable, competitive and quality services. Apart from China, UnionPay cards are accepted in 150 countries and regions with cards issued in 40 countries and regions.

The launching ceremony took place with the presence of Mr. Shi Wenchao - President of China UnionPay, on the occasion said: "With the opening of UnionPay acceptance business by SBM, we have realised comprehensive cooperation with the top three acquirers and issuers in Mauritius. The rapid expansion of acceptance coverage not only serves tourists visiting Mauritius better but also lays a solid foundation for making the UnionPay card a common payment tool of local residents. Going forward, we will cooperate closely with financial institutions in Mauritius, seize the opportunity of issuing cards on a large scale and promote the local business development. We aim to provide payment convenience for exchanges between Mauritius and China as well as other countries worldwide.
