August sales the best ever for BMW Group

With 121 615 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand vehicles sold worldwide last month, the BMW Group achieved its best-ever August sales result. This represents an increase of 9.7% compared to August last year. Since the beginning of the year the BMW Group has delivered 1 157 777 vehicles worldwide, an increase of 7.9% compared with the first eight months of the previous year.

Locally, BMW South Africa sold 2 520 vehicles in August - an increase of 13,8% compared to the same month last year. Since January 2012, BMW South Africa has delivered 19 133 vehicles to local customers, an increase of 11,3% compared with January to August 2011 figures.

BMW brand worldwide sales increased by 8.3% in August to 102 730 vehicles. From January to August, 963 110 BMW brand vehicles were delivered, which was 7.8% higher than for the same period in the previous year. One of the main growth drivers in August was the BMW 1 Series - sales surged to 14 565 units, an increase of 91.0% over the previous year. Solid gains were achieved by the BMW 3 Series sedan with an increase of 15.9% to 20 951 units sold. Sales of the BMW 5 Series increased by 3.7% to 23 337 vehicles.

Successful start for BMW X1

The newly modified BMW X1 had a successful start in its first full month in August with 11 039 vehicles delivered, an increase of 33.4% over the same month last year. The BMW X3 continued its sales momentum with worldwide sales increasing 7.6% to 9 817 units in August. Sales for the BMW X6 climbed 22.0% in the reported month to 3,430 vehicles. The BMW 6 Series remains the clear leader in its segment with 1 747 vehicles delivered in August, an increase of 276.5% over the same month last year.

In South Africa, BMW brand sales increased by 15% in August to 2 305 vehicles. For the first eight months of this year, 17 347 BMW vehicles were delivered to local customers, which was 11,8% higher than the same period in 2011. The BMW 3 Series sedan continued to show solid growth with 1 171 units delivered to customers.

MINI brand sales climbed 18.5% to 18 671 vehicles worldwide in August. Sales for MINI have increased by 8.3% to 192 652 vehicles in the first eight months of 2012. The MINI Countryman remains one of the key growth drivers with 63 817 vehicles sold since the beginning of the year, an increase of 22.9% over the same period in 2011. MINI brand sales in South Africa increased by 1,9% in August to 215 vehicles. Local sales for MINI have increased by 6,6% to 1 786 vehicles in the first eight months of 2012.

Motorcycles and scooters

With 7 400 units, BMW Motorrad supplied more vehicles than ever before in the month of August. 11.3 % more vehicles were handed over to customers than in August 2011. From January up to and including August 2012, BMW Motorrad supplied 76 729 motorcycles and maxi scooters to its customers, compared to 78 280 units the previous year. Husqvarna Motorcycles supplied a total of 6 101 vehicles to the Husqvarna dealer network up to and including August 2012, which is an increase of 29%. Supplies in the month of August totalled 372 vehicles, 37 units more than the previous year.

In South Africa, BMW Motorrad delivered 194 motorcycles to customers in August 2012 - an increase of 16% compared to August 2011. For the first eight months of 2012, BMW Motorrad supplied 1 635 motorcycles to customers, which is 3.3% more than last year. The best selling motorcycles during August 2012 were the R Series and the F Series.
