Fuel price update

The price of petrol is expected to increase from Wednesday, 2 September 2020, while diesel will cost 21 cents less.

The Energy Department says both grades of petrol will increase by 1 cent a litre.

Price changes

• Both Grades of Petrol 93 and 95 (ULP & LRP): 1.00 cents per litre increase in retail price
  
• Both Grades of Diesel 0.05% and 0.005% Sulphur: 21.00 cents per litre decrease in wholesale price
  
• Illuminating Paraffin (Wholesale): 26.00 cents per litre decrease in wholesale price
  
• Illuminating Paraffin (SMNRP): 35.00 cents per litre decrease in the Single Maximum National Retail price (SMNRP)
  
• Maximum Retail Price for LPGAS: (36.00) cents per kilogram increase in the maximum retail price.

Economic factors

The average international product prices for petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin decreased during the period under review.

The Rand depreciated against the US Dollar during the period under review, on average, when compared to the previous period. The average Rand/US Dollar exchange rate for the period 31 July 2020 to 27 August 2020 was 17.2814 compared to 16.8234 during the previous period. This led to a higher contribution to the Basic Fuel Prices on petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 14.99 c/l, 15.12 c/l and 13.42 c/l respectively.
