Jo'burg needs public transport service

Integration of the transport system is crucial for Johannesburg's growth, mayoral committee member for transport Rehana Moosajee said on Tuesday (22 January).

There was a lack of integration between different modes of transport and commuters did not have proper sources of information, she told reporters in Johannesburg.

The city had to improve its transport system if it wanted to remain the country's economic hub.

Moosajee said research would be conducted for the formulation of a new integrated transport plan. The last plan, which looked at transport supply and demand, was drawn up in 2003.

It would take three months to collect data and the first draft of the plan would be available in June.

She said vandalism of infrastructure, lack of integration between modes of transport and an ageing road network were some of the problems facing the city.

Other concerns are that the poor people are spending too much money on transport and that many people wasted a lot of productive time in traffic.
