Millions lost to robot cable thieves

Thieves, who are stealing cables from robots used at major intersections in Johannesburg, are costing the city almost R6-million a year in repairs and The Sowetan says that the Johannesburg Roads Agency recorded 418 thefts between July last year and June this year.

Quoting JRA spokesman, Thulani Makhubela, The Sowetan says thieves are responsible for the traffic congestion at broken robots that often results in serious, even fatal, road accidents.

The stolen copper cables are sold to scrap metal merchants.
