Both airlines, which are members of Star Alliance, will introduce code-share services on the newly-launched main route Johannesburg-Beijing-Johannesburg, as well as on the Beijing to Shanghai routes - on which SAA Voyager members will earn miles.
According to SAA CEO Siza Mzimela, the agreement serves to nurture economic activity, as it offers domestic and regional benefits within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Mzimela expected the deal to pay dividends both in terms of trade and tourism. "This code share agreement with Air China [will benefit] both African and Chinese interests, as well as [...] other growing economies, such as Brazil, which now has easy and convenient access to China through SAA's service," he said. PRWeb reports that SAA has three non-stop weekly flights between South Africa and the Chinese capital.
