Joburg commuters have a shocking time

An international study by IBM entitled the "Commuter Pain Index" shows that commuters in Johannesburg spend the longest time on the roads getting to work or to and from schools. On average commuters spend 36 minutes on the roads of Nairobi, Mexico City, Beijing, Bangalore and Moscow.

Business Day reports that the frustrating commuting time for Johannesburg's commuters has not been resolved by the Gautrain or the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Plan that cost billions to implement.

According to the report, 52% of respondents in Johannesburg said that long commuting times increased their stress levels and 30% of them said that they had endured "significant stress" during the past year.

They reported that traffic jams in particular had a negative effect on stress levels, health and productivity.
