Still time to join JSE Investment Challenge
The challenge highlights the power of great teamwork by bringing the youth together – with an intention to encourage a saving culture. The competition has already attracted the entries of 7102 participants from high schools and tertiary institutions, after registrations opened two weeks ago.
The challenge introduces high school learners and tertiary education students to the world of investing through a simulated game in which participants are given R1 million in virtual currency to trade and invest with on the JSE. The aim is to get young people to learn about the fundamentals of investment strategies, and encourages the participants to research and strategically plan the way in which they trade.
“We are excited about the level of interest we have seen so far this year. It shows the Challenge is very popular as a learning tool and inculcates a passion for investing. Every year the participants also seem to be lifting the standards of the competition, and we are particularly encouraged by this,” says Ralph Speirs, CSI officer at the JSE.
High school learners and tertiary students participate in separate categories and in a team-format over a period of six months. Schools or tertiary institutions may enter as many teams as they wish, and each team can choose to compete in a specific risk category (i.e. income, equity growth and speculator). The best performing portfolios are announced and rewarded on a monthly basis, as well as at the end of the competition. The annual prize money for the best portfolios is deposited into Satrix investment accounts for the individuals and the organisations they represent.
“We invite all learners and students to be part of this exciting and rewarding learning opportunity by entering a team before 12 April 2016, to be in the running for one of the prizes. This is one of the easiest ways to become a part of the investment community,” says Speirs.
