C&D conference opens in Accra

According to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the maiden Africa Construction and Development Conference opened in Accra yesterday (Thursday) with a call on contractors to improve technical capacity and eliminate shoddy work so as to earn the trust of the public. Ghanaian Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing Nii Nortey Dua, said delayed projects and wrong classification were hurting the industry.

The two-day conference aims to create a platform for African contractors, built-environment professionals and stakeholders to deliberate on how to develop the industry. More than two hundred participants from Ghana and other African countries take part in the conference, which will be followed by the second edition of the National Contractors Excellence Awards on Saturday November 10.

According to the GNA, Nii Nortey Dua called on the Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors of Ghana (ABCECG) to enter a dialogue with government on the creation of a regulatory body for the construction industry. "We are ... hopeful that our indigenous firms will partner (with other firms) from the continent and elsewhere to ensure that they are strong enough to (become ...) major players," he said.
