Developing, engineering cables, Aberdare focuses on SA growth
South African power cable manufacturer Aberdare Cables, part of the JSE-listed Altron Group, has increased its production capacity by 25% over the past ten years, Engineering News reports. 66 six years old Aberdare, a member of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers, has three manufacturing sites in Gauteng, Port Elizabeth and Pietermaritzburg.
Aberdare CEO designate Keith Edmond says that, even through the current flat economy, the building and construction sector has remained constant and showed some growth in cable demand, primarily from the mining industry and for Eskom's electrification projects. Aberdare's Executive Director: Contractual Business Siphiti Sibeko says that Eskom, mines and municipalities each have their unique needs in terms of cabling products. "Our focus remains on the development and engineering of cables suited to local conditions that cost-effectively meet the needs of specific industrial and mining needs," he says.
According to Engineering News, Aberdare is also actively involved in reducing cable theft, which directly costs the South African economy in the region of R5-billion a year. The company partnered with Cable Guard, a locally designed, developed and produced economic, easily applied cable theft protection system.
