Maize shortfall looms

Mexico, already SA's fastest-growing market for agricultural goods, continues to be the main destination for maize exports.

However, as the grain flows across the Atlantic, SA is facing a shortage for a second successive year.

In the marketing season that started on May 4, the central American country has sourced more than 490 000t of white maize from SA. It represents 78% of SA's white maize exports and 72% of total maize exports. The figures, from the SA Grain Information Service, include deliveries up to September 7. The marketing season still has 32 weeks to run.

Meanwhile, Grain SA expects a maize shortage in SA of almost 200 000t by April, based on exports estimated at about 1Mt.

Maize exports have picked up pace since the effects of the US drought became clear in June.
