SA avocado growers aim to export to the U.S. by 2014
According to Fresh Fruit Portal, South African avocado growers are in negotiations with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) over arrangements concerning the health of the fruit that would allow SA growers to export avocado to the United States.
South Africa is expanding its avocado plantations and is keen to add the U.S. to its current market, which includes the U.K. and continental Europe.
South African Avocado Growers' Association (SAAGA) chief executive Derek Donkin said his organisation had been investigating suitable treatments for avocado. Donkin told Fresh Fruit Portal it was unlikely that South Africa avocado would gain access to U.S. markets before 2014.
