C40 Cities Mayors' Summit discuss Arup's findings

The C40 Cities Mayors' Summit Joburg 2014 took place last week at the Sandton Convention Centre. The summit is an update on the actions taken by major cities around the world to combat climate change impacts, based on studies carried out by the C40 research team, Arup.

It shows that mayors and leaders from 60 cities worldwide have now taken more than 8,000 specific actions under the C40 banner to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve resilience.

The plenary session, 'C40 cities are taking measurable action to combat climate change and release of the climate action in megacities 2.0 report' saw Mark Watts, executive director of C40, present 'Climate Action in Megacities 2.0'.

Climate actions, such as implementing rigorous energy efficiency regulations for buildings, instituting bus rapid transit lines or flood mapping efforts, aim to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and improve urban resilience to climate change.

    Report is a roadmap

"Climate action in megacities demonstrates just how much we can achieve simply by helping city authorities to understand how other cities have gone about meeting the shared challenges they face every day," said Paula Kirk, leader of Arup's energy and climate change team. "This report provides a roadmap for every city and town in the world to take action and make a real difference."

Arup was appointed as the strategic adviser to the C40 in May 2009 for its long record of accomplishment in working with cities across the world to tackle the issues of climate change in the urban environment.

Supporting the launch of the report, Arup's UKMEA chairman, Alan Belfield, said, "The report stands as a testament to the tremendous work already being carried out by mayors and city authorities around the globe to tackle climate change and boost resilience. Not only that, but it also provides a readily accessible menu of actions that cities can take to improve peoples' lives and deliver value for money at the same time."
