Several Eastern Cape families have been identified as part of a genetics study into eye conditions that cause progressive loss of sight, Retina South Africa's Gail Cillié said.

She said her organisation was trying to find children to be part of a University of Cape Town study.

"[We are looking for children] particularly because they are more likely to benefit from interventions to correct vision in the short to medium term," Cillié said.

Retina SA's Eastern Cape branch is also working with three schools catering for children with special needs to identify the pupils who stand to benefit.

Nearly 30 pupils at the three schools have been identified with a retinal disease.

Today is also the start of World Retina Week.
