Students vote health, education jobs tops

SA's health and education departments were nominated as the most ideal employers for 2010 by university science and humanities students, according to a survey released last week by employer branding specialist Magnet Communications.

Peter Johansson, MD of Magnet Communications, said: "We are definitely seeing the effects of the economic downturn affecting (students') career expectations, particularly when it comes to salaries, career goals and a preference for employers that offer long-term security."

He said there was an increasing desire for job security. However, he pointed out that students' high preference for employment in the government was unique to SA, mainly because the government employed a large number of people. "About a third of all employees in SA work for the government, about 1,6-million."

Magnet gathered the data for the student survey during a three- month period, which elicited the responses of more than 38700 students at SA's 23 universities across 49 industry segments.

On receiving the Magnet ideal employer award, Department of Health director-general Gadizwe Nkomo said: "We have been involved in a major thrust to inform learners at schools around the country about the employment opportunities offered by the Department of Health.

"In addition to that, we have also partnered with universities to ensure that we attract top talent to build up the department."

The department has a critical shortage of pharmacists, nurses and medical doctors. Because this is also a global problem, the department is looking at growing talent from within the pool of learners at high schools.

Commerce students voted KPMG as their number one ideal employer, which pushed Absa into second place, after having been in the number one spot since 2006. Engineering students once again voted Eskom into the top spot.
