Pledge to fight drug-resistant TB
Gathering in Beijing, health ministers from 27 countries agreed a series of measures to combat the global epidemic of drug resistant tuberculosis. The three-day-conference was organised by the UN World Health Organisation, China's Ministry of Health and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Representatives from countries including India, China, Russia and South Africa promised to move towards universal access to diagnosis and treatment for multi-drug resistant TB and extensively drug-resistant TB. Only 3% of the 500,000 new multi-drug resistant TB cases every year are diagnosed.
